What to Do with those Silk Scarves

By John Sousa

So you have found a silk scarf that you are absolutely in love with. Its colors are bold and artistic and its pattern is exquisite. It is so intricate and colorful as a matter of fact that you have absolutely no idea how, where, or with what to wear it. Fear not! Here are several full proof ways to ensure you don that scarf with class and beauty.

Start with a Blank Canvas!

One great way to wear your treasure is to make it the focal point of your look. It's a great way to dress up outer wear and can also be incorporated into an outfit for all day... if you make sure the rest of your apparel is unassuming. Silk scarves need to look purposeful to look appropriate, so they cannot be fighting with any other colors or patterns. Your other fashion items should be solid and neutral. Even your other accessories should stay basic so nothing argues with the details in the scarf, you want the eye to be drawn to the scarf only... so the look is not chaotic or overpowering.

Wear It to Flaunt It

Since your silk scarf is to become the eye catcher of your overall look, make sure you place it near a body part you don’t mind showing off! If you're a little thick through the middle, you may want to use it as a belt to cinch in your waistline. If you want people to keep their eyes on your face, wear it as a head wrap or tied around the throat. Chances are if you are using it as part of your outer wear you will be wearing it somewhere around the neck. Don’t hide too much of it under the lapel of a coat! If you really want to show it off, leave as much of it as possible free and exposed.

Switch It Up

If you really love your silk scarves, you will want to be able to wear them as often as possible. The best way to do this is to completely change how you include it in your outfit.

1. Perhaps with one look, you can tie it around your neck, pair it with a simple tailored sweater and skirt, and accessorize with matching shoes and a bracelet in a coordinating color.

2. Another completely different look would be to wear it around the waist as a belt to cinch in an oversized crisp button up. Pair that with jeans and ballet slippers for a new outfit that properly highlights your silk scarf but can be worn in a totally different setting. With a little creativity, you can create an outfit for any occasion, any manner of dress, and any season that properly utilizes your silk scarf.

Once you have experimented with your new gorgeous accessory, you may find that it is your favorite item! (Almost a certainty). With all the versatility of silk scarves, buy as many varieties as you can. Never again will you have to settle for an outfit that is hum drum. Using this fabulous accessory will always make your look unique!
