Shawls... Any Style, Any Time
By John Sousa
Shawls come in different materials, are used for a variety of purposes, can create a number of diverse looks, and may be worn in more than 10 ways... and there is no secret formula to wearing one properly. When looking around for your perfect piece of clothing accessory, there are many things to consider. More often than not, the average user who has taken a deep liking to using and wearing shawls own more than just one. Different Occasion, Different Wrap When relaxing in the comfort of your home is the perfect chance to cuddle up in the warmth and softness of a large wrap in pashmina, cotton, wool, or cashmere. Dressy nights on the other hand, call for more elegantly-styled shawls or scarves that will not only add some zing to an otherwise bland outfit, but also keep away the chills of a cool summer night. Enjoying the outdoors also calls for the services of a pashmina or woolen stole. Whether on a backyard camping, boating trip, family picnic, or just about any... al fresco adventure, nothing is handier to have around than one of these versatile wraps. Outdoor throws and thick alpaca shawls are also very convenient to have around, especially when a regular part of your daily routine is indulging in meditation or yoga. Just spread one on the floor and you’re good to go. Keep it within Budget Just as they do in fabric and style, stoles also vary in cost. Prices for good quality ones can range from $40 – $100. There are those that also cost under $25 but are more of the scarf types, or baby fleece throws. Wraps that are more intricate in design, material, and workmanship can go from $100 - $200. Large and thick throws which are used to ensure the perennial comfortable feel of the lanai couch, could go as pricey as more than $200 apiece. Variety in Style Shawls come not just in all shapes and sizes but more importantly, in different styles as well. Those with beads or beaded tassels are best for evening wraps for that more glamorous look and feel. For home accents however, the more casual lap blankets in wool or chenille are more appropriate and just perfect for that snuggling time. Then again, wraps come in even more styles – with sleeves or pockets, from ponchos to ruanas, there really is more to the simple stole than meets the eye. The Fabric Says it All The material used in the making of this must-have fashion accessory is also a very important factor to consider. The fabrics come in a wide range from alpaca to wool to cashmere and mohair. Elegant shawls for special events are usually made of silk, pashmina, velvet, or fine acrylics. On the other hand, those from cotton, wool, or chenille are more common for casual wraps used in the home. For Her, For Him While women may revel in the sheer variety of scarves and stoles to choose from, men need not fret... because some of these products are in fact, made with men in mind. Merino wool scarves, silk aviators scarves and some hand woven stoles make ideal gifts for men. A well chosen wrap or stole can serve more than one purpose and yet this should not stop one from owning different pieces to match every event. Whether burrowing with a good book at home, or pimping it up for a night in town, there is always a perfect shawl to match your mood or activity. |
