A Fur Cape and the Many Benefits of Having One
By John Sousa
The essential qualities of a fur cape are not confined to the luxury-associated depictions of glamour, fashion, and posh. This garment, especially it's material, can be appraised in terms of its practical benefits as well. To best understand how it can be practical in buying a fur coat, even when just the thought of it can make any animal rights activist cringe, let's try to dissect the material of which it is made of. Animal hair The hair of animals, are usually comprised of three parts: ground hair, guard hair, and awn hair. Among the three, only ground hair and guard hair have very important roles in protecting the creature that bears them. It is not clear what the role of awn is except that it is an intermediate layer between ground and guard. Ground hair, as the name suggests, is found at the bottom. That is to say, it is the layer closest to the animal’s skin. They are mostly short, flattened, curly, and denser compared to the other layers. These properties allow it to trap air. Now, since trapped air is one of the most efficient thermal insulators, this layer then serves as the thermal insulating layer of the animal, keeping it warm during very cold weather. Guard hair on the other hand, again as the name suggests, comprises the top most layer and serves as the first layer of protection (or guard) against outside factors such as dust and water. Guard hair is usually long, coarse, straight, and in most cases, a good water repellant. Hence, when the creature is caught under minimal to average rainfall, the raindrops simply roll off the animal’s body, keeping the skin underneath dry. Benefits It is now clear why fur is one of the most preferred material when choosing for a protective garment. In fact, such material was the premier choice for protective clothing in the olden days. It was only in the dawn of the modern ages, when synthetic materials were developed, that animal hair was relegated as material for fashion accessories. Having a fur cape is therefore not only for show, although admittedly it pretty much holds the top spot in that department as well, but for protective purposes as well. It is important that we keep this mindset when faced with the dilemma between buying such a cape or not. The price tag might appear too costly but remember that you are not only buying one for aesthetical but also for practical reasons. |
